Metaphysical Bible Interpretation of Psalms Chapter 84

Metaphysically Interpreting Psalms 84:1-12

For the Chief Musician; set to the Gittith. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

84:1How amiable are thy tabernacles,
    O Jehovah of hosts!

84:2My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth
    for the courts of Jehovah;
My heart and my flesh
    cry out unto the living God.

84:3Yea, the sparrow hath found her a house,
    And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young,
    Even thine altars, O Jehovah of hosts,
My King,
    and my God.

84:4Blessed are they that dwell in thy house:
    They will be still praising thee.

Selah

84:5Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee;
    In whose heart are the highways to Zion.

84:6Passing through the valley of Weeping
    they make it a place of springs;
    Yea, the early rain covereth it with blessings.

84:7They go from strength to strength;
    Every one of them appeareth before God in Zion.

84:8O Jehovah God of hosts, hear my prayer;
    Give ear, O God of Jacob.

Selah

84:9Behold, O God our shield,
    And look upon the face of thine anointed.

84:10For a day in thy courts
    is better than a thousand.
I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God,
    Than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

84:11For Jehovah God is a sun and a shield:
    Jehovah will give grace and glory;
No good thing will he withhold
    from them that walk uprightly.

84:12O Jehovah of hosts,
    Blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.

INTERPRETATION

The verses in our lesson that are taken from the 84th Psalm describe the great desirability of God's house, with its courts, altars, and tabernacles. Jesus said, “In my Father's house are many mansions” (“abiding places,” according to the marginal translation given in John 14:2). We are the “Father's House”; the “mansions” or “abiding places” are the states of consciousness. We become truly satisfied and enter into abiding joy and wholeness, only as we become aware of this truth and consciously unify ourselves with the Father within us, our indwelling Christ: “Abide in me, and I in you.”

What are the “tabernacles” of Jehovah? They are the states of consciousness in which the spiritual faculties of the Infinite (Jehovah of hosts) hold sway. They inspire our love for the good; therefore they are “amiable.”

What are the “courts of Jehovah”? They are the approaches to Truth that lead us to desire God and enter into communion with Him.

Why is it that “my heart and my flesh cry out unto the living God”? Because God is life, and neither mind nor soul nor body can rest content, except in the full consciousness of life. To know the living God is the desire of all living men, and at their best they will worship nothing less.

What is our normal state of mind? Joyfulness. Even the birds and animals are normally cheerful. How much more so are we when we live in harmony with the law of our being. “Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: They will be still, praising thee.”
